In the winter of 1835–36, the Danish painter Martinus Rørbye and the architect Gottlieb Bindesbøll travelled to Constantinople, present-day Istanbul. During their stay in the city, they each produced a substantial number of sketches and studies, primarily depicting everyday life and architecture, and both showed great interest in the culture and the people they encountered. Published in connection with the exhibition Rørbye & Bindesbøll.
The Journey to Constantinople at The David Collection in 2026, this book explores the artists’ travel and their encounter with the Ottoman world. It also examines how the sketches created during their journey were later incorporated into their work upon returning to Denmark.
